A 16-year-old Milwaukee resident faces charges following the death of his 4-year-old sister on Saturday, Oct. 24. The girl, identified as Jurnee Walker, died at the scene of a shooting near the intersection of 53rd Street and Center Avenue.
Police stated the gun discharged while the victim played with her 6-year-old brother. The 16-year-old brother was charged with neglecting a child resulting in death and possession of a dangerous weapon.
In juvenile court on Monday, Oct. 26, defense attorneys argued for the teen's release to his family. They presented him as a good student with no prior record of trouble. Prosecutors countered by detailing the circumstances of the shooting, including allegations that the children had used the firearm as a toy before the incident.
Officers also discovered a second unsecured gun inside the residence. The children's mother addressed the court, urging the judge to send her son home so he could grieve with her. "I need my son to come home. I need him with me. I need him to grieve with me," she said.
Milwaukee Police Chief Assistant Chief Paul Lough told reporters the department is investigating how the teen accessed the weapon. He emphasized the need for safe storage and handling of firearms by all households. The teenager is scheduled to return to court for a plea hearing on Friday, Oct. 30.
