John DeMerit was 90 years old when he talked about the Milwaukee Braves' 1957 World Series title, a season he still remembers in detail. He said the win felt different from anything before it. "It was pretty exciting, way beyond any experience I ever had before, obviously," DeMerit said.
The Braves took the World Series that year, before the Brewers ever played for one. Milwaukee's current club is in the postseason now, and DeMerit was asked how far he thinks it goes. He pointed to a fifth game, not a sweep. "I think Game 5," DeMerit said. "I think they have more of an advantage with, but I think 5 games."
DeMerit played with Hank Aaron, who was a few years younger than him. He recalled driving with Aaron from Mequon during the 1961 season. "Yeah, I think in '61 I was there the whole year. I'd hook a ride with him from Mequon. You think nothing of it at the time and when you look back, wow! Good guy. I never had any problems with him. He was young too. Only a few years older than I was," DeMerit said.
He also praised the Brewers group that is on the field now. "This team, is spectacular," DeMerit said. When asked what stood out about their play, he pointed to how they work together. "They sure had an attitude, sticking together, following our lead, doing the things they need to for the game," DeMerit said.
DeMerit said he believes he is among the oldest living players who appeared in a World Series. He has been to the Braves monument at American Family Field. The conversation took place in Port Washington, Wisconsin.
DeMerit lives in Port Washington. He was an outfielder for the Milwaukee Braves.
