A 33-year-old man suspected of killing three people in Seattle and Kenosha was arrested in Chicago on Tuesday, according to police. The suspect, Michael Oneal Fleming, is accused of shooting his mother and step-father inside their Kenosha home, and of killing a gas station clerk in Seattle less than a week earlier.
Kenosha police said officers went to the couple's home near 55th and Washington on Monday afternoon to perform a welfare check. They found the door ajar and saw the bodies of the victims, Rodney Brushwood and Rena Oneal, when they went inside. There were signs the two had been dead for days. Police said Oneal's son, Fleming, shot them.
The loss is still weighing on people who lived nearby. Neighbor Ophelia Ellis described the couple as "a loving couple. A hardworking couple," and said she presumed they had tried to help Fleming as much as they could. "And I still think about them. I still think about them," Ellis said. She added that she had interacted with Fleming before and that he was not polite and quiet. After the discovery next door, she said, she could not sleep.
The Seattle case dates to Oct. 13. Security footage shows Fleming buying a drink at a gas station shortly before 6 a.m. He then shoots the clerk at least four times, killing him. Prosecutors said he left "not in any apparent hurry."
Court documents indicate Fleming had worked for four years at a different gas station owned by the same person and had recently quit. Seattle police reviewed the victim's phone and did not find a motive for the killing.
After the Kenosha deaths, Fleming's twin brother told police that Fleming had recently texted him and their mother. According to the brother, Fleming was acting "erratic, delusional and in some sort of mental health crisis." Kenosha police have not offered any information on a motive.
Fleming was arrested on a Chicago street on Tuesday and remains in custody there. He will be sent to Seattle first to face a first-degree homicide charge. Extradition could take anywhere from a week to a month. After the Seattle case, he will be brought to Kenosha County court.
Kenosha police thanked community members who provided tips and came forward as witnesses, saying their help assisted the investigation. The information in this report came from Ellis, Kenosha police, Kenosha search warrants and King County criminal complaints.
